Alan Turing was one of the greatest mathematical minds of the 20th century, a visionary whose work at Bletchley Park helped shorten the Second World War and whose ideas laid the foundations for modern computing.

Born in London in 1912, Turing showed extraordinary talent from an early age. His 1936 paper on ‘computable numbers’ introduced the concept of a universal machine - the theoretical blueprint for every computer in existence today.

During the war, Turing played a central role in breaking the German Enigma code. His electromechanical ‘Bombe’ machine enabled Allied forces to read encrypted messages, saving countless lives and altering the course of the conflict. Yet his contributions remained secret for decades.

After the war, Turing continued pioneering work in artificial intelligence, asking questions that still shape the field: Can machines think? How do we define intelligence? His ‘Turing Test’ remains a benchmark for machine reasoning.

Despite his brilliance, Turing was persecuted for his sexuality. Convicted under discriminatory laws, he died in 1954 in circumstances still debated. Today, he is honoured as a hero, a pioneer, and a symbol of the need for inclusivity and justice.
